3 Ways to Help Get Over Your Fear of Scuba Diving

A person scuba diving.

Scuba diving is an activity that many people love, but for some, it can be quite a challenge. In addition, many people have a fear of scuba diving. But there are ways to get over your anxiety so that you can start enjoying this exciting activity.

Understand Your Fear

First and foremost, it’s essential to know why you’re afraid. If it’s a fear of drowning or being underwater alone, this fear can address with training. If it’s a fear of the unknown or being in an unfamiliar environment, those fears may not go away until you’ve gone through the experience. Look at pictures of people underwater on social media. Seeing people having a blast while scuba diving may help motivate you to try it out!

Practice

After understanding what scares you about the sport, you need to come up with solutions to overcome those fears. For example, if the thought of underwater scares you, then try going snorkeling at a beach near your house or renting a mask and snorkel set and practicing in shallow water. Snorkeling will allow you to get used to being underwater without having to jump into deep water right away.

Snorkeling will also allow you to become more comfortable with the idea of being underwater before taking on the challenge of scuba diving itself. Next, create an action plan with some short-term goals that will help build to the long-term goal of overcoming your fears. For example, an action plan might include joining an online support group and learning calm breathing techniques or relaxation exercises.

Take Classes

Another way to overcome your fear of scuba diving is by taking the PADI Discover Scuba Diving Course. This way, you’ll know what’s going on during each dive and how everything works together, so there won’t be any surprises later on down the road when it comes time for actual scuba lessons. Find a dive center that helps people like you to learn scuba diving. Ask them about their experience.

Practice diaphragmatic breathing whenever possible—you can even do this while sitting at your desk working. The more often you do this, the quicker you can improve.
